Advanced Pump Off Controller and Auto Optimization (Fluid Pounding and Rod Buckling Control)

SSi built in Advanced POC prevents Fluid pounding and Rod Buckling and gets the best pump fillage possible. Contrary to regular (competitive) POC, this feature can monitor the surface card and try to make it rectangular by increasing and decreasing the up and down speeds automatically to achieve the best pump fillage. Since this will change the overall SPM, the operator can define limits for the minimum and maximum SPM he wants the unit to run. Furthermore, operators can define the amount of speed change. This means in case of any fluid pounding/rod buckling/low pump fillage the unit slows down by A% and in case of a reasonable pump fillage it speeds up by B%. After each automatic speed change and to give some time for the reservoir to respond, the unit does not change anything for C number of strokes and then it evaluates the consequence of the previous speed change on pump fillage and decides again if to speed up or slow down again. A, B, C, and other parameters are configurable by operator.

The three identical cards below show that the decision about how to change the speed depends on the position of the user defined rectangular reference area. In the first card, since the measured load remains between the max and min user defined load when the unit passes through the max user defined position to the min user defined position during downstroke, then no speed change occurs.

The middle example shows that in some areas between the max and min position the measured load is more than the user defined max load therefore the unit slows down.

And finally in the third example as the load drops below the user defined min load in some areas between max and min position then the unit speeds up.

Turn Around Load Control / Rod Stretch Control

During normal operation, maximum stress on the rod occurs at the bottom of the stroke when the unit changes the direction of movement from downward to upward. The SSi unit can pause the unit for X seconds at the bottom of the stroke to let the rod relax before starting the up stroke. This reduces the stress on the rod and increases the lifetime of the rod. The time X can be from 0.1 second to 999 seconds. In the case of pumped off wells, the time that unit goes to Pump Off mode can be divided to the number of strokes per day and pause the unit for a few seconds at the bottom of the stroke, instead of turning the unit off for an extended period. This feature is programmable at the HMI by the Operator.

Advanced Rod Hang Up and Carrier Bar Separation Control

This advanced feature slows the unit down until there is no rod hang up or carrier bar separation therefore, it does not go directly to minimum speed. The units’ cascades down the Speeds which means getting higher overall SPM without carrier bar separation and rod hang up. The unit is smart enough to speed back up if carrier bar separation does not occur.

Up Stroke Rod Sticking and Sand Build up Control.

This feature detects any abnormal increase in rod load and compares it with the operator’s defined set point. If in any case due to downhole problems the rod load is more than the set point, the unit reverses the direction of movement from up to down and continues pumping until the client decides to fix the downhole problem. The technology protects the downhole equipment and prevents shutting down the unit, which means losing production and also assisting to prevent the sand build up.

Turn Around Load Control/Rod Stretch Control – Pause Function at end of Down Stroke

During normal operation, maximum stress on the rod occurs at the bottom of the stroke when the unit changes the direction of movement from downward to upward. The SSi unit is able to pause the unit for X seconds at the bottom of the stroke to let the rod relax before starting the up stroke. This reduces the stress on the rod and increases the lifetime of the rod. The time X can be from 0.1 second to 999 seconds. In the case of pumped off wells, the time that unit goes to Pump Off mode can be divided to the number of strokes per day and pause the unit for a few seconds at the bottom of the stroke, instead of turning the unit off for a long period of time.

Field Example Showing Production Improvement

Here is an example of an operator showing the Dynacards before and the resultant effect after the Smart Speed Logic was installed. All SSi Units can be upgraded in the field in about one hour by our Service Technicians.

The operator had better pump fillage after the new logic was installed, therefore greater production but the unit slowed down. This also prevented the fluid pounding as shown in the card before the new logic was installed. This extends the life of the downhole equipment.
